He was predeceased by: his parents, James Johnston and Margaret Johnston (Matyi); his brother James Michael Johnston; and his grandson Shawn Michael Conkle. He is survived by: his wife Susan Johnston; his children, Jodi Conkle (Kevin) and Michael Johnston (Jodi); his grandsons, Brendan Conkle, Carter Johnston and Aidan Johnston; and his nieces, Holly Helminski (Kevin) and Jerilynn Navarro (Raymond).
