He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Charles Swanigan and Ruth Swanigan; his spouse Dorothy Jean Thompson Swanigan; his children, Eugene Hatfield (Susan), Robert Hatfield (Penny), Rosie McCoy (Timothy) and Billy Hatfield (Amy); his siblings, Arthur Swanigan, Gene Swanigan (Debbie), Jackie Swanigan, Sue Springstein, Cathy McCord, Louise Pugh and Elaine Ash; his daughter Janet McCoy; his granddaughters, Brooklin Burton and Carly Wilburn; and his siblings, Wilford Swanigan, Kenny Swanigan, Harold Swanigan, Ted Swanigan and Betty Hamm. He was also cherished by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins James was preceded in death by his parents, wife.
