He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond Gates and Marie Gates; his sisters, Rose Daniel, Ruth Carroll and Marilyn Hanline; and his nephews, David Ruffing and Robert Daniel.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Kaye Gates (Laviola) of Norwalk; his sons, Nathan Gates (Lisa Waite) of Bellevue and Nick Gates (Caitlin Woyak) of Madison, Wisconsin; and his sisters, Joann Showalter (Faydean "Gus") of Monroeville, Sharon Ruffing (Gerald) of Bellevue and Beverly Thurston (John "Ted") of Monroeville. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
