He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Johnie Prater and Helen Prater (Addis); his children, James Jr. (Xu Tao) of Cleveland, Annette Wilcox (Oron) and Mary Jenkins (James); his foster daughter Dorothy Austin (Champagne) of Norwalk; his grandchildren, Johnnie Wilcox, Cassidy Travis (Brad), Caine Jenkins, Brittany Wilcox and Oron Wilcox (Lauren); and his siblings, Johnnie Jr. and Sallie Lee. He was also cherished by numerous great-grandchildren.
