He was predeceased by: his parents, George Hawthorn and Madalyn Hawthorn (Wilson); and his siblings, Mary Jane Harsh, Druzilla Sue Beers and Bruce Ellsworth Hawthorn.

He is survived by: his wife Connie Hawthorn; his children, Norma Mull (Gordon), Mary Ellen Hawthorn, William John, Jr. and George Hawthorn; his stepsons, Jason and Anthony Shinn (Katie); his grandchildren, Jennifer Mumford, Madalyn Hawthorn, Brandon Mull (Kim), George Hawthorn (Tiffany), Joshua Hawthorn, Anthony Shinn, Jr. and Ian Shinn; and his great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Cunningham, Mason Burkhart, Makenzie Mull, Avery Mull, Jaxson Hawthorn, Levi Hawthorn and Jace William Hawthorn.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Yvrose Pierre Alexandre Orphanage in Jeremie, Haiti, C/O Canal Fulton Church of the Nazarene, 771 Cherry Street E, Canal Fulton, Ohio 44614.

“Connie and family. Sorry to hear of John's passing but we know that he's probably resting at the feet of Jesus if he's not strolling around with him and talking about Haiti. John made a great impact on my life when I spent my first visit to Haiti with him. While they're on the first visit my wife called and announced the fact that she had breast cancer. John was very supportive. He was a great guy and very special to those children in Haiti whose lives he made a great difference in.”
