He was predeceased by: his wife Patricia; and his son Michael. He is survived by: his children, Joseph R. III (Michele), Traci Cottrill (Dan) and Kelly Eby (David); his grandchildren, Tia Patterson, Joseph Patterson IV, Amber Murray, Kelsey Weidrick, Colin Cottrill, Jessica Eby and Alexandra Eby; and his great grandchildren, Brenna, Blake, Jace, Lucas, Miles, Matthew and Delilah.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
