He was predeceased by: his father Oliver Freeman; his wife Marilyn A. Dickerson; and his stepson Timothy Root. He is survived by: his children, James Carles, Jr., Joe Carles (Michelle) of South Carolina and Ginny Brashear (Terry) of North Baltimore; his stepson Jerry Root; and his grandchildren, Amanda Tirey (Jeremy), Aaron Clemans (Danielle), Alexa Farley (Ben), Jordan Carles, Jesse Carles, Angela Knox, James Thomas Carles, Ashley Brashear, Joshua Brashear and Justin Brashear. He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren.
