He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Carl Bates and Effie Bates (Norton); his children, Paula McGee (Tom) and Carl Bates; his daughter-in-law Sandi Bates; his close friend Clara Marshall of Howland; his son Paul Bates; and also Paul B. Marshall of Dayton, Tennessee. He was also cherished by seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
