He was predeceased by: his parents, Clovis "Ned" Bates and Rosalee Bates; his sisters, Barbara Wilson and Betty Gibson; and his son Richard Bates.
He is survived by: his wife Sue Ann Lindsey Bates; his children, Tracy Duncan (James) of Flemington and Tim Bates (Laurie DeBolt) of Newton Falls, Ohio; and his grandchildren, Kristin Timmy (Daniel), Katelyn (Dylan), Jonathan (Marina), Justin, Joshua, Courtney, James, Dennis and Stephanie. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.
