He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Thornton and Orella Thornton; his wife Mabel Thornton (Moffit); his daughter Diana Louise; his siblings, Lelah McMahon, Ruth Moore, Florence Anderson, Ethel Norman, Norvel Thornton (Hank) and Judy Jones; and his granddaughter-in-law Shelly Thornton.
He is survived by: his children, Terry Thornton (Janice) of Port Washington, Gary Thornton (Shirley) of Gnadenhutten, Carol Hoffman (Don) of Gnadenhutten, Beverly Long (Jim) of Dennison and Jaynie Norman (John) of Port Washington; his grandchildren, Brent Thornton, Diana Mariol (Erik), Brian Thornton, Jason Thornton (Sabrina), Jennifer Stratton (Kris), Michele Lieser (Matt), Michael Hoffman (Valerie), Tyler Long (Alicia), Curtis Long (Brittany), Blake Norman (Vanessa Scott) and Zachary Norman (Stephanie); his brother Bob Thornton; and his nieces, Alesia Decker and Kay Morrison. He is also survived by 24 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren.
