He was predeceased by: his parents, Morris Bowers and Helen Bowers; his wife Karla S. Bowers (Wright); his sister Bonnie Sides; and his friend Doug Massie.

He is survived by: his longtime love Marlena Gilliam; his son Christopher R. Van Horn; his siblings, John Bowers (Dolores) and Susan Anoles of Alabama; and his niece Jayme Potts. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
