He was predeceased by: his parents, John Payne and Edna Payne; and his brothers, Wilford, John, Jr. and James Payne.

He is survived by: his wife Eloise B. Payne; his children, Susan McWhite (John) of Greensboro, NC and Stephen Payne (Tricia) of Willis, MI; his grandchildren, Tyrus Brannon (Lorin), Trevyn Payne of Appleton, WI, Stesha Payne of Lansing, MI and Daniel McWhite of Greensboro; his great grandchildren, Alison Brannon and Kayci Foster; and his friend Kay Munion.
