He was predeceased by: his parents, John J. Scantlen and Ivy Mae Scantlen (Shaffer); his wife Lois Ellen Jones; and his siblings, DeCoy Shaffer and LaRonda Dean.
He is survived by: his children, Monty Scantlen (Kathy) of Orland, Karen Bryant (Gannon) of Defiance and Laura Pirtle (Gary) of Montpelier. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren.
