Stephen H Gaible Obituary
Stephen Henry Gaible, affectionately known as "Yogi," passed away at the age of 80 on January 19, 2024. Born on August 22, 1943, Steve grew up in Kennedy Heights and Pleasant Ridge, ultimately settling on the land he loved in Loveland. He was a proud Delta Beta and graduate of Woodward High School's class of 1961. Steve then served his country as an air traffic controller in the Air Force, stationed in Bermuda. After receiving an honorable discharge, he attended the University of Cincinnati, where he earned his MBA.
Steve's life was enriched by his beloved wife of 41 years, Linda (Hertel) Gaible, and their children: Katie Gardner (Tobin), Rob Gaible (Becky), Andy Cole (Beth), and Lauren Mattingly (Rob). He was a cherished Papa to Jake, Sarah, Ryan, Conner, Tobin, Gaible, and Auggie. Preceded in death by his parents, Robert Julian Gaible and Virginia Joos Gaible, Steve is also survived by his siblings: Mike, Sally, Jill, Ellen, and Tommy.
Steve filled a room - not only in size but in personality. He had a passion for pestering his family by filming every part of life while giggling in the background, leaving hundreds of hours of now cherished VHS tapes. He played amateur hockey for years at the Cincinnati Gardens forming a group of lifelong friends that continued to reunite for fifty years after they left the ice. His favorite place was their ten acres in Loveland, "Gaible Acres", where he spent the last forty years of his life. He built an oddball world that he loved to share with everyone, which included a 9-hole golf course, a hodge podge collection of memorabilia that could rival that of a museum and a pole barn lit by vintage neon signs and filled with classic cars that became a gathering spot for all of life's milestones.
A few of his favorite things in no particular order: stovetop popcorn, chili, beer, Slap Shot, oyster crackers, Jack's pizza, black coffee, neon signs, Big K pop, SCTV, Bullet (Steve McQueen), jellybeans, Five Easy Pieces, hockey, jazz, Jonathan Winters, brats and metts, SNL, Andy Rooney, crossword puzzles, road atlases, pretzels, frugality, sun tanning, hot tubs, chainsaws, Stephen Wright, Buicks, corned beef hash, onion rings, Miles Davis and Cheez-Its. He had a deep hatred of mustard and pickles. His unique fashion sense often included boxer briefs as streetwear, and he was rarely seen without his leather deck shoes. He was a lifelong subscriber to the Cincinnati Enquirer and always read the paper with a highlighter-in-hand to mark any grammatical errors.
A true original, Steve's legacy is marked by his eclectic interests, his warm, genuine and engaging personality, and the countless lives he touched. He is loved and will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A visitation will be held at Evan's Funeral Home in Milford on February 3rd from 3pm-5pm, followed by a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
