He was predeceased by: his parents, John Merritt and Verbia Merritt (Cox); and his wife Alice Merritt. He is survived by: his children, Joel Merritt, Jr. (Laura), Cheryl Taylor (Greg) and Cyndi Haller (Brett); his stepchildren, Richard Sanatore, Timothy Sanatore (Carol), Lori Koutras and Rob Sanatore; and his brothers, Kenneth Merritt and Mike Merritt. He is also survived by several grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
