He was predeceased by: his parents, Arley Lay and Nell Lay (Smith); his wife Betty L. Lay; his granddaughter Angela Alcorn; and his son-in-law Gary Estes.

He is survived by: his children, L. Jean Estes and Gary Nelson; and his siblings, Wanda Leach and Arley Lay Jr.. He is also survived by 2 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
