He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard W. Brandt and Emma L. Brandt; and his siblings, Alan Brandt and Ronda Daiello. He is survived by: his wife Mary Brandt; his son Jim Brandt (Lisa); his grandchildren, Eric Brandt, Jacob Brandt and Sara Morse; and his great grandchild Nia Morse.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association in James' honor.
