He was predeceased by: his parents, Delbert "Doc" and Viva Mae Thompson Gilliland; his close friend Martha Mae Mulhern; and his brothers, Ron, Terry, Doug and Barry Gilliland.
He is survived by: his children, Scott Gilliland (Tara) of Waverly, Debbie Cline (Dale) of McArthur and Lisa Gilliland of McArthur; his grandchildren, Alexis, Addison Gilliland of Nelsonville, Jonah and Whitney Gilliland of Waverly; his siblings, Gary Gilliland (Sandy), Herb Gilliland (Gloria), Rick Gilliland (Pam), Mike Gilliland (Charlene), Randy Gilliland, Judy Phipps (Ron), Barbara Remy, Beverly Lackey (Jim), Diana Woerner (James), Connie Allen (Rick) and Beth Ann Patterson (Mike); and his brother-in-law Charles West (Dolly). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of James Edward Gilliland to the Vinton County Athletic Boosters, P.O. Box 293, McArthur, Ohio 45651.
