He was predeceased by: his mother Betty Long Harrison (Corwin); his adoptive father Ralph Long; and his stepfather Richard Lichty. He is survived by: his father John Harp; his former wife Cynthia J. Williams; his wife Cindy Long; his children, Tammy Barham (Kyle) of Defiance, Nate Long of Defiance, John Long Jr. (Janet) of Indianapolis, Ayersville of Indianapolis, Jeff Porter of Indianapolis, Jackie Porter of Indianapolis, Melba Brown of Indianapolis and Jeremy Brown (Tori) of Indianapolis; and his brother Kevin Long (Steve). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
