He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene Gehring and Hildred Gehring (Martin); his former wife Janice; his brothers, Robert and Richard Gehring; and his stepson James Vernyi.

He is survived by: his wife Jean Gehring (Vernyi); his sons, Michael Gehring (Susan) and Mark Gehring (June); his stepsons, Dale Vernyi (Janice) and Mark Vernyi (Jennifer); and his grandchildren, Jason (Elizabeth), Ryan, Daniel (Jess), Andrew (Amy), Alex, Kyle, Wyatt, Madeline and Sarah.
