He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph C. Sr. Smarsh and Joyce C. Smarsh; his son Joseph Michael Smarsh; and his siblings, Joseph "Bud" Smarsh, Jonathon Smarsh, Henry Smarsh and Joycelyn Smarsh.
He is survived by: his wife Shereen M. Smarsh of Lorain; his son Mark A. Smarsh; his sister Donna; his daughter Diana Smarsh; his brother Ronald Smarsh; and his granddaughters, Kara and Leah Smarsh. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
