He was predeceased by: his parents, David Shelby and Rena Shelby (Gladman); and his sister Edith Burkitt (Shelby). He is survived by: his children, David Shelby Jr. and Jackie Shelby; his grandchildren, TJ Brown, Tiffin Shelby, Tammy Poore, Sarah Aquilar (Wil), Dani Ross (Kenny Dennison), Laura Mettler (Josh) and Matthew Lewis; and his close friend Marie Brickey. He is also survived by family members, friends.
