He was predeceased by: his parents, Frederick Bates and Eleanor J. Bates (Shaw); and his son David S. Bates. He is survived by: his wife Nanette M. Bates (Bartchy); his daughter Hilary R. Bates of Wooster; his brothers, James V. Bates (Cheryl) of Salem, Michael F. Bates of Lisbon, Robert L. Bates (Dessie) of Shelbyville and Randall S. Bates (Paula) of Lisbon; and his grandchildren, Ashley R. Hersberger, David Alexander Bates, Colton D. Hershberger, Makayla R. Hlika and Makenzie R. Hlifka.
