He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Buchanan and Irene Cassidy (McKenzie); his wife Helen Buchanan (Scott); his daughter Kelly Buchanan (Coon); and his siblings, Bill Buchanan and Dale Buchanan.

He is survived by: his children, Scott Buchanan (Kathy), Dawn Lascelles (Carl) and Misty Johnson (Darren); his brother Don Buchanan; his grandchildren, David Buchanan, Steven Buchanan, Maria Coon, Nicole Wood, Mat Coon, Jeni Irick, Chris Irick and Tyler Johnson; and his great grandchildren, Braydin, Caleb, Caylee, Audrie, Avery, Damon, Jackson, Tucker, Briggs, Dawson and Greyson. He is also survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
