“. She made me look good on the gym floor. I phoned her to tell her about our 50th class reunion. Her son answered the phone. He was very polite and helpful. He made adjustments on the phone so that Mary Jane could talk to me. I don't know which son I spoke to: that was 7 years ago. I knew then that she had done well in her life and was successful as a mother. I was very pleased. I go to a store often that sells old-fashioned candies. I buy Mary Janes and think of her fondly.”

“All the second grades went to the Toledo Zoo on a field trip. I was on Mary Jane's bus but did not know her. She was across the aisle and back 2 seats. Her father came on the bus to bring her a box to share with others. It had rows of Mary Janes. I conned her out of three. As a kid I was excited by candy. As an adult I reflected on her father's generosity. She was so very shy, and the only black child on a bus of white students. That is how I got to kow her. We square danced in Jr. Hi.”
