He was predeceased by: his father Eugene Painter; and his stepfather James Robbins. He is survived by: his sons, TJ Painter (Ashley) and Josh Painter; his grandson Kohan; his mother Kay Robbins (Slusser); and his siblings, Steve Painter, Susie (Greg Barnes), Dave (Peg Painter), Lorie (Jeff Hurley), Sara (Jeff Baker) and Todd Robbins. He is also survived by numerous nieces & nephews, great nieces & great nephews; one great-great nephew.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Amputee Coalition or the American Diabetes Association.
