He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond E. Schmelzer and Freda Schmelzer (Saum); his brother Kenneth; his daughter Leslie; and his great grandchild Alerie.

He is survived by: his children, Cheri Thomas (Doug), Terry Schmelzer, Lisa Bronstad (Robert), Christian Schmelzer, Angela Fowler, Tyreese Schmelzer, Qushaunda Schmelzer and Brandon Schmelzer; his grandchildren, Grace, Lilliana "Boog", Kailyn, Lukas, Madelyn and Felisha; his brother Gilbert Schmelzer (Nancy); and his former wife Linda Schmelzer.
