It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Verna Candace McCarty of Kitts Hill, Ohio, who passed away on January 7, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her parents, Owen Roach and Amanda Miller Roach; her husband Virgil Burnice McCarty; her daughter Linda Higgins; her son-in-law Robert Higgins; and her siblings, Herschel Roach, Inez Taylor, Eloise Myers and Wilma Bennett.
She is survived by: her daughter Debra J. Short (Clarence) of Kitts Hill; her sister Sharon K. Mayberry of Franklin Furnace; her granddaughters, Missy Johnson (Chad) of Willow Wood, Candi Newcomb of Scottown, Vanessa Honaker (Dan) of Chesapeake, Jenny Short of Ironton and Lori Bocook (Jason) of Patriot; her nephew Jonathan Short of Kitts Hill; her great grandchildren, Josh Johnson (Lee Ann), Megan Heffner (Brandon), Austin Short (Lexie), Evan Newcomb, Mazee Stroud, Abbi Lewis (Clark), Thor Honaker, Gavin Honaker, David Cooper and Jonas Bocook; and her great great grandchildren, Raylann Johnson, Hunter Johnson, Tucker Heffner, Lydia Heffner and Asher Short.
Visitation was held on Saturday, January 11th 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Phillips Funeral Home (1004 S 7th St, Ironton, OH 45638). A funeral service was held on Sunday, January 12th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Mt. Pleasant Free Will Baptist Church (16688 Co Rd 2, Scottown, OH 45678).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Mt. Pleasant Freewill Baptist Church, C/O Debra Short 68 Pvt. Dr. 42 Kitts Hill, Ohio 45645.
