He was predeceased by: his parents, Alberta Louise (Wilcox) and Gilbert Eugene Gates; and his siblings, Gilberta Dailey, Richard and Galie Gates.
He is survived by: his children, Cheryl L. O'Neil of Columbus and Brian D. Gates (Kimberley) of Mount Vernon, Ohio; his brother Harley J. Gates of Kinsman, Ohio; his grandchildren, Peggy, Daniel, Sean, Winston and Wesley; and also, Andrew Gates (Tracy) of Akron, Ohio, Coke, Ezra and Michael.
