He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Hammel and Opal May Hammel (Dunnard); his daughter Naomi Ruth Slone; and his stepsons, David Johnson and John Jackson.
He is survived by: his wife Lydia (Carpenter); his son James J. Hammel (Donna); his stepchildren, Denise Oliver (Scott), Carol Litmer (Scott) and Doug Johnson (Marcia); and his son-in-law Charles Slone. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren.
