He was predeceased by: his parents, John E. Maier and Eula Maier (Wish); his son Dr. John F. Maier II; his granddaughter Molly E. Maier; and his brother Richard P. Maier.

He is survived by: his wife Ann Carson; his daughters, Beth Christian (Dave) and Jane Standley (Jeff); his grandchildren, Lindy Martin (Tark), Luke Ross (Rachel), Jenna Smith (Will), Emily Peña (Derrick), Morgan Jungels (Dan), Joel Standley (Sydney), Madison Standley, Griffen Standley, Dann Christian (Shea) and Sallie Christian (Matt Stahl); his brothers, Robert Maier (Carol) and David Maier (Debbie); his siblings-in-law, Rita Maier and Jim Carson (Marty); and his daughter-in-law Lin Bates (Scott). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
