He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Mattern and Mary Dziatkowicz Mattern; his wife Patricia E. Wilson Mattern; and his sisters, Ann Young and Helen Barnhart.

He is survived by: his children, Marc Mattern (Carla) of Clearwater, John Mattern (Dawn Rabl) of Portage, Wisconsin, Cheryl Tartaglione (Steve) of Northfield Center and Lisa Marinacci (Eric) of Heath, Ohio; his grandchildren, Jeremy (Ashley), Caitlin, Kenzie, Kylie and Caden; his great grandchildren, Henry, Rose and Hazel; and his siblings, Albert Mattern (Betty) of Cadiz and Laura Ward of Hopedale, Ohio..
