He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles L. Bates Sr. and Ruth Chilson Bates; his wife Marianne Blaney; and his brothers, Reed, Donald and Charles "Bud" Bates.
He is survived by: his children, LuAnne Bates of Hartford, Richard Bates of Hartford and Thomas Bates of Allen, TX.; his grandchildren, Beth, Justin, Brad and Brandon; his great grandchildren, Bobby III, Colton, Lilly, Jaxson, Beckett, Baker and Elle; and his brother David Bates of Hubbard.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations be made in Robert's name to either the Ryan Blaney Foundation, P.O. Box 1875, Concord, NC 28026 or to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, Oh 44512.
