She was predeceased by: her husband Carl "Jake" Messerschmidt; her parents, Thomas Nowlin and Margaret Nowlin; her siblings, Leonard Nowlin (Joyce), Catherine Beardsley (Lester), Norma McConnell, Walter Nowlin, Joseph Nowlin, Thomas Nowlin Jr. and Elda Richards; and her brother-in-law Richard Helms.

She is survived by: her children, Susan Radcliffe (Kevin), Jerry Messerschmidt, Roger Messerschmidt (Becky) and Sherry "Punky" Kater (Kevin Birkofer); her grandchildren, Stacey Ruwe (Eric), Daniel Radcliffe (Joani), Briana Pennington, Danielle Messerschmidt, Bella Messerschmidt and Colin Nichols; her great grandchildren, Keiran, Connor Ruwe and Kaydence Pennington; her sister Florence Helms; and her siblings-in-law, Rita Alig, Annie Weekly, June Nowlin and John Richards.
