He was predeceased by: his father Robert G. Oates; his sister Jodi West; his grandparents, Urma Willeke, Edna Oates, Clayton Willeke and Frank Oates; and his pet Lela.
He is survived by: his mother Beverly Sterling; his siblings, Cynda Hawk (Richard Sr.), Pamela Nickell (Michael) and Curtis Sterling (Christopher); and his nieces and nephews, Laura Frazier (Joe), Tyna Anderson (Al), Richard Jr. Hawk (Ginger), Chad Hawk (Tammy), Gretchen Bailey (Sean) and Betsy Shreck (Adam).
