He is survived by: his children, Pamela Thurmond (Malcolm) of Philadelphia, PA and Matthew Elchert of Tiffin; his grandson Benjamin Thurmond of Philadelphia, PA; his siblings, Jim Elchert (Linda) of Tiffin, Jerry Elchert (Terri) of Tiffin, John Elchert (Martha) of Traverse City, MI, Jane Riggs (John) of Pleasant Hill, OR, Peg Renninger (Tom) of Tiffin, Therese Vogel (George) of Tiffin and Wendy Cleveland (Shawn) of Columbus; his brother-in-law Steve Steyer of Tiffin; and also Sandy Blake of Columbus.
