She was predeceased by: her parents, Sherman Phillips and Josephine Phillips; her brother Sherman Phillips, Jr.; her cousins, Marlene Sandberg and Elaine Reed; and also Herb Kennedy.
She is survived by: her daughters, Cheryl McFarren (Mathew), Lisa Kennedy-Leary (Steve) and Kathleen Kennedy; her nephew Lance Gordon; her cousins, Anne Bradford (Dan) and Kurt Sandberg (Jenny); her grandchildren, Brianna Leary, Tobin McFarren, MacKayla Kennedy-Harris, McKenzie and Nicholas Leary; her aunt Alma (Sherman Sr.); her uncle Pink (Velma); her sister-in-law Jo; her sister Christine; her nieces, Marlene and Elaine; her husband Herb; her child Montclair Park; her friend Ben Schwartz; her uncle Fred; and also, Josephine and Fred.
Contributions to honor Velma may be made to Maine's Center for Ecological Teaching and Learning, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering the sorts of engagement with the natural world that Velma loved and taught others to love; her daughter Kathleen is a founder of this organization and the current President of the Board.
