He was predeceased by: his parents, Loy Zimmer and Anna Zimmer; his wife Dorothy A. Zimmer; his sons, Thomas, Richard, James and Michael Zimmer; his grandson Jonathan Scarnecchia; and his close friend Ella Kalas.

He is survived by: his children, Barbara Scarnecchia (Aldo) and Stephen Zimmer (Andrea); his grandchildren, Amy (Brian), Kevin and Sarah (Josh); and his sisters, Jean Martin and Janet Fleming. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.
