He was predeceased by: his significant other Alyce M. Mooney; his child Michaele A.; and his brothers, Thomas F. Mooney Jr. and John E. Mooney. He is survived by: his children, Mary A. (Michael), Robert D. Jr. (Kathleen) and Thomas J.; his grandchildren, Robert D. III, Michael, James, Andrew, Thomas Jr., Maggie, Patrick and Annie; his godson Thomas Dennis O'Connor; and his son Towing.
