He was predeceased by: his parents, Edwin Gates and Bessie Gates (Shelton); his wife Betty Lou Pinkerman Gates; and his sisters, Mary Winslow of Vero Beach, Florida, Dorothy Mikesell of Vero Beach, Florida, Jean Sheets (Hayward) of Gallipolis, Ohio and Marcella Gates.

He is survived by: his nieces, Kathy Nibert (Mike) of Gallipolis Ferry and Susie Bays (JR) of Southside; and his nephew David Winslow (Cathy) of St. Augustine, Florida..
