He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence and Gladys M. (Sheltz); his daughter Stephanie Burgess; and his sister Pat Troupe. He is survived by: his wife Linda Thornton (McElhatten); his children, Joe Thornton (Dana) of Lexington, Heather Parrett (Joel) of Oakwood, Megan Owens (Jeff) of Mansfield, Jarrod Manley of Galion, Adam Thornton (Julie) of Shelby, Jessica O'Brien (Joey) of Galion and Jordan Thornton of Galion; his grandchildren, Lilli, Kylie, Jalynn, Jocelynn, Janae, Ethan, Elaina, Jaxon, Cameron, Cooper, Brooklynn, Trevor, Brooklyn, Jillian, Anthony, Stevie, Brianna and Tyler; his siblings, Lyn Lough of Lexington and Ken Sheppard of St. Petersburg; and his nephew Chris Troupe. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren.
