He was predeceased by: his father James Wilkinson; his wife Virginia "Ginny" Wilkinson; and his sisters, Mary Dawson and Doris Pruitt. He is survived by: his children, James Wilkinson III (Debbie) and Marchell Wilkinson; his grandchildren, James Robbins, John Robbins, Jennifer Robbins-McDonald and Dakota Wilkinson; and his siblings, Grover Wilkinson, Dixie Pedone (Vic), Margaret Williams and Beverly Lambert (George). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
