He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Wesley and Clara Belle Dykes Downing; and his close friends, Virgil Stuckey and Jesse "Smitty" Smedley. He is survived by: his wife Mary Hicks Downing; his son John Downing (Tracy) of Washington, C. H.; his stepchildren, Jim Schumacher of Jackson and Chris Knisley (Gary) of Bainbridge; his grandchildren, Jacob Downing, A. J. Knisley and Pierce Knisley; and his brother Gary Massie of Kentucky.
