He was predeceased by: his parents, Floyd E. Spitler and Hazel E. Eikenbery Spitler Schlotterbeck; his stepfather Larry Schlotterbeck; his uncle Weltha (Pete Kisling); and his cousin Col. Todd A. Eikenbery.

He is survived by: his wife Sharon Spitler; his children, Michael J. Spitler and Michelle Shafer (Mike); his grandchildren, Justin Spitler (Samantha), Jerod Spitler (Logan), Jessica Spitler and Sydney Shafer; his great grandchildren, Dominick Spitler and Paisley Rae Spitler; his half-brother Joe Schlotterbeck (Margo) of West Virginia; his stepsiblings, Paul J. Schlotterbeck (Gayle) of Priest River and Sheri Schlotterbeck (Rob Myer); and his cousins, Terry Eikenbery, Steve Eikenbery and Kris Eikenbery.
