He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Newton and Della Boyd Newton. He is survived by: his wife Betty Watson Newton; his sons, David Newton of Columbus and Derk Newton (Katherine) of Dennison; his sister Karlie King of Columbus; and his granddaughters, Zoe Newton-Rummell and Gwen Rummell.
In 2014 he was awarded the Tuscarawas County University Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching.
