He was predeceased by: his parents, Laura M. Sterling and Clare G. Sterling; his former wife Genevieve L. Schmitt; and his daughter Jeanne M. Sterling. He is survived by: his daughters, Michelle L. Laffoon (Sam), Patricia S. Sterling and Christan R. Graham (Paul); his wife Virginia Leatherman Sterling; and his children, Jeffery Leatherman (Barbara), Beth Starrett (Wayne), Barry Leatherman, Amy Young (Phil) and Josie Dean (Mike).
