He was predeceased by: his parents, Hicel Bates and Helen Bates (Allen); his wife Ila "Lavaughn" Bates (Johnson); his daughter Sheryl Ann; and his siblings, William Bates, Ruth Boyd and Ruby Blackstone.
He is survived by: his children, Jeffery, Bea Bates, Susan and Jeffrey Tucker; his grandchildren, Erica, Chris Kenny, William and Liv Bates; and his great grandchildren, Cora Kenny, Declan Kenny, Hicel Bates, Olin Bates, Maria and Inez Adams. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
