He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Hicks and Gertrude Hicks (Anderson); his wife Teresa B. Hicks (Rietschlin); his son-in-law John Shell; his grandson Eric Yetzer; and his brother Dr. Robert Hicks.

He is survived by: his children, Dianne Shell of New Washington, David Hicks of Crestline, Susan Yetzer (Allen) of Shelby, James Hicks, Jr. (Linda) of Crestline, Joseph Hicks (Tammy) of Hamilton, William Hicks of Orlando, FL, Rebecca Hicks-Concilla of Naples, FL and Heidi Barga (Brian) of Blacklick; and his sister-in-law Charlene Spitan. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren.
