Keith Merrin Obituary
D. Keith Merrin, 85, went to his eternal home in heaven on August 5, 2023, after a long battle with dementia. He preceded his college sweetheart and love of his life, Sue, by only eight short hours in his death. Theirs was a love that lasted over six decades.
Keith played high school basketball at Fredericktown and Mount Vernon high schools. His playing days continued at Capital University where he graduated with a degree in mathematics education. He received a master's degree in mathematics at Washington State University.
Coach Merrin was a well-respected teacher and coach. His coaching career started as the freshman basketball coach at Capital University. He then moved to the high school level, teaching and coaching at Columbus North, Logan Elm, Delaware Hayes, Mount Vernon, and Gahanna Lincoln. He coached football and track, but is best known for his chosen sport, basketball.
Coach had a meaningful impact on the lives of the many young athletes. His high standards and steadfast commitment gained their respect and affection. He had a career of 274 wins and led teams to league, district, and regional championships. When at Mount Vernon, he led the team to the state semi-finals. In addition to many awards and recognitions, Coach Merrin received the Ohio District 10 Hall of Honor Award and was inducted into the Mount Vernon and Logan Elm Halls of Fame.
Although Coach Merrin received many accolades over his career, he cherished his faith in Jesus Christ and love of family most. He was a churchman and shared his faith by example through his integrity, community service, and pursuit of God's truth. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren meant the world to him. His sense of humor, commitment to attending their activities, and special Christmas antics will be fondly remembered. He was an extra-special presence in their lives.
Until his health condition made it impossible, Keith was active in the life of the church and worshipped the Lord faithfully at First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
He will be sadly missed and survived by son, Greg (Fran); daughters, Laura (Steve) Short, and Sherri (Dave) Perry; grandchildren Matthew Short, Ben (Jamie) Perry, Alise (Kevin) Napp, Joe (Hayley) Perry, Nathan (Amanda) Short, Whitney (Aaron) Swart, Jim (Brittany) Perry, Luke Perry, and Levi Perry; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Sonya (Jerry) Martin.
He was preceded in death by his; parents, Richard and Charlotte; and brother, Russell.
