He was predeceased by: his parents, Oscar E. Swords and Mary Edna Ramey Swords; and his brothers, Oscar Jr. "Buddy", Archie, Ronnie and Wilbur D. Swords.

He is survived by: his wife Leigh Ann Arms Swords; his daughter Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Richards (Kevin) of Chillicothe; his grandchildren, Gregory Richards and Sydney Richards; and his siblings, Johnny Swords (Linda) of West Portsmouth, Rickey Swords (Judy) of West Portsmouth, Albert Swords of West Portsmouth, Scottie Swords (Susie) of West Portsmouth, Gloria Means (Albert) of Chillicothe, Cherry Briggs (Mark) of West Portsmouth and Tressa Hackworth (Kevin) of West Portsmouth. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews.
